Buongiorno a tutti!

Goodmorning everyone! Today I would like to touch a very important issue to me ever faced: the importance of preserving stem cells from umbilical cord blood at the time when our son is at world. And ‘known, but should be more so, that the umbilical cord is rich in stem cells that are used to treat diseases of the blood and immune system such as lymphoma, leukemia, bone marrow aplasia, thalassemia, immunodeficiencies and certain metabolic defects. In 1988 began the use of cord blood stem cells in therapies and the first transplant with cord blood stem cells was carried out in Paris. The patient, M. F. for 5 years, was suffering from Anemia Fanconi . The cells were from cord blood sister. The child after the transplant is cured completamente.Da that time things have evolved so as to reach more than 40,000 people treated (for more than 80 diseases) .Sadly, however, despite these impressive results, in Italy they throw 95% of umbilical cords as “special waste” explains Prof Francesco Zinno, immunologist and hematologist of the University of Tor Vergata.Cosa you can do to decrease this waste? In the resolution of the European Parliament of 11 September 2012 urging the cord blood banks, both public and private to work closely in order to be able to develop the availability and exchange of cord blood and tissue samples at national, European and international. The FamiCord Group, a private bank with headquarters in Warsaw (www.famicord.it) together with the best Specialists in Maternity Hospitals has launched a project to collect cord blood for the Division Public. From 2012 to 2015 we were collected over 3000 samples at the Division Post, available for transplantation and recently (March 2016) one of them has been able to save the little Mohammed, suffering from leukemia. It ‘important to know that only in our country each year become ill with leukemia about 5 children per 100 thousand inhabitants, and lymphomas account for 15% of all cancers in children aged between 0 and 14 years. And even more important to be aware of the fact that leukemia can be cured through the transplantation of cord blood stem cells. Prospective parents should be made aware in an appropriate and timely manner about how important relinquish her umbilical cord after birth at public bank or store in a private bank for the child and family, knowing that it is of organic waste material and that the moment of birth is the only time in life that enables the extraction of stem cells in a simple and fast and keep them for a possible therapy throughout the life of the child and his family, the levy is completely painless and risk free neither for the mother nor the child. As she says Prof. Zinno “Throw the umbilical cord is like throwing in the container hospital waste any potentially usable organ for a transplant.” I unfortunately was not able to keep the umbilical cord because Ginevra was born premature, but I often think about what treasure I lost .. We reflect on ‘importance of this gesture … a hug.
